Adapted from Thomas Hardy’s "The Mayor of Casterbridge", THE CLAIM, set in the 1870s California Gold Rush, follows the story of Daniel Dillon (Peter Mullan), who traded his wife (Nastassja Kinski) and newborn daughter for a gold mine 20 years earlier. Dillion is thrown into a kind of hell in the prospecting town he controls, when it is being surveyed & deemed impractical as a potential railroad route, and at the same time his wife and now adult daughter Hope (Sarah Polley) return to his life.
